Nowadays you’re just as likely to hear their digital descendants raving about different products and techniques for converting color files into monochrome and everybody has their favorite method and tool(s) they prefer to use. In the film days, gurus jealously guarded their formulae for processing film using a precise blend of Rodinal, grain alcohol, and rainwater, along with a shot of Dr. Arnold Newman’s portrait of composer Igor Stravinsky at the piano could never have been made in color and have the same impact it has as a monochrome image.
